On 7 June 2022, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a few changes to the super visa program for parents and grandparents. These changes will come into force on 4 July 2022.

The super visa is a multiple entry visa which currently allows parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for two (2) years at a time; however, the Government of Canada has announced an increase in the length of stay. As of July, super visa holders would be able to stay in Canada for five (5) years per entry into Canada. They will also have the option to extend their stay by up to two (2) years while in Canada. Thus, super visa holders may now be able to stay in Canada for up to seven (7) consecutive years.

The new changes will also allow the Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship to designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to super visa applicants. Currently, only Canadian insurance providers can provide such coverage.
