IRCC to temporarily lift off-campus work hours

October 15, 2022
A person with a backpack is walking down a narrow aisle between two tall bookshelves filled with books in a library. The scene is slightly out of focus, creating a sense of depth as the individual heads towards the brightly lit exit at the end of the aisle.

From 15 November 2022 to 31 December 2023, international students in Canada who have authorization to work off-campus will not be restricted by the 20-hour-per-week rule. Previously, students with the authorization to work off-campus were permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week while class is in session, as well as full-time during scheduled breaks.

This temporary measure will provide international students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Canada while supporting Canadian employers during Canada’s post-pandemic growth.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will also be launching a pilot project to automate the processing of study permit extensions meeting certain criteria. Specific details have not yet been released.
