On 27 February 2024, Canada will start accepting online applications for permanent residence from family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are affected by the conflict in Sudan. This temporary program will remain open for one year, with the number of applications capped at 3250.
To qualify, the family member must have been residing in Sudan on 15 April 2023 and must be one of the following in relation to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident (referred to as an “anchor”): spouse or common-law partner, child (regardless of age), grandchild, parent, grandparent, or sibling.
In addition to other requirements, the family member must be outside Canada at the time of application and must intend to reside in a province or territory other than the province of Quebec. In turn, the anchor relative must demonstrate their ability to support their family member(s) by meeting certain financial requirements.
An immigration officer has the discretion to grant an exemption for some of these requirements.
